ENGINEERING FOR STEEL FABRICATORS

An engineering partner for your delegated design needs, built around the way your shop works

WE KNOW HOW A SHOP RUNS
Several of our principal engineers built their careers inside major steel fabricators before joining SSE. That firsthand experience shows up in every connection we design, from bolt patterns chosen for fit-up to weld access your fitters can actually reach.
YOUR STEEL ENGINEERING TEAM – UNDER ONE ROOF
A fabricator's structural engineering work doesn't live in one box, and neither do we. Connection design, secondary and miscellaneous steel, stairs and railings, shop drawing review, erection engineering, and field fixes. Whatever your shop runs into on a steel project, we've already got a team set up to handle it.
BUILT TO HIT YOUR DATES
Fabrication schedules move fast, and the dates you've committed to are the dates we work to. From kickoff, we map out the work proactively around your erection sequence and long-lead items, deliver in priority order to keep your detailers moving, and stay ahead of changes so your shop stays on track and your steel hits the site when it needs to.
DIRECT ACCESS TO YOUR PROJECT ENGINEER
Every SSE project is managed by a licensed PE or SE who's with you from kickoff through design and erection. When you call, you're talking to the engineer making the decisions on your job, not a layer in between. It's a setup built around how fabricators actually work: fast answers, clear ownership, and one person you can trust with the details from the first sketch through the last field fix.
Learning from the Shop: How SSE Engineers Deliver Fabricator-Friendly Designs

I had no experience with steel before SSE. I immediately got experience by going out to the shop and field. Recently, we went on a shop tour at uh Division 5. We saw the steel in the shop, being able to see the connections that I had in 2D, seeing them in 3D. It was pretty cool seeing something in real life, not just on paper on a screen. It's important to visit a shop when you're a young engineer for a lot of reasons. Welding, actually doing it, and like knowing how it's done. Also, every time you go to a shop, you are made more aware of like fabricator preferences, what type of connections they prefer. When you're in the office, I mean, you try to communicate them and get to know what they would prefer. But, I mean, feel like something always comes up in the shop that you learn and you can improve on your designs. For engineering, a CJP weld is just utilizing the full strength of the member. And that corresponds to a fab shop. It's like I have to do so many passes of this weld to completely penetrate the member. and that takes a lot of time. So, if we're able to get like a fillet weld to work in place of a CJP, then that's cost beneficial for the fabricator. Also, like going to the shop, you you realize like how welds act. Like if you have a really big weld on one side of a plate, it's going to like want to pull it to the side. Um, so you just have to just think about how everything fits up together. I mean, you have to think about the accessibility to make the welds. Also, you have to think about like what type of welds the fabricator would prefer. Complex welds like CJP or PJP welds will cost more and they don't want to have to do that. If you can get a fillet weld to work, like extend the weld length if possible to make the weld smaller. If you have exposure to that, you can see what the problem is and fix it beforehand so that way there's no problems in the future. You really need to keep that in mind when you design to really relate it back to what they're dealing with.

EXPERIENCE THAT SHOWS UP ON EVERY PROJECT

Across more than 1,500 completed projects and over 50 fabricators nationwide, we've designed connections for nearly every kind of steel work a shop runs into, from heavy industrial, high-seismic hospitals, data centers, aerospace, and schools, on projects anywhere from a few tons up to 40,000 tons, whether complex or straightforward. Every project sharpens the way we approach the next, which is why our processes are built around what fabricators actually need.
Estimating Support
Pricing a steel project well starts with knowing what's actually going to cost you. We help you scope the engineering side, flag the conditions that drive cost, and provide enough detail on the tricky connections so you can bid them with confidence instead of padding for the unknown.
Project Kickoff
A good kickoff makes the rest of the project easier. In the first few days, we work through the contract documents with your team, flag RFIs and out-of-sequence conditions, and lock in your fabrication preferences and erection plan so the design that follows fits the way your shop actually builds.
Connection Design
Connection design is what we built SSE around. Shear, bracing, moment, seismic, crane, truss, and welded connections, designed and PE-stamped to AISC standards, with your shop's preferences and your erector's plan baked into every detail.
Miscellaneous Design
Stairs, platforms, ladders, catwalks, canopies, and the secondary steel that always seems to fall through the cracks. We engineer misc. work with the same care we put into primary connections, on the same schedule as the rest of your project, so it's never the thing slowing your shop down.
Detailer Coordination
Connection design only works if your detailer can use it. We stay engaged through shop drawing development, turning RFIs around quickly and giving detailers clear answers instead of guesses. We know what your shop needs and what your detailer needs to keep moving, and we plug in wherever it helps the project stay on track.
Shop Drawing Review
Shop drawing review is one more way we drive quality through a project. We compare the detailer's drawings against our own connection and misc. steel designs, flag anything that doesn't line up, and return clean markups in time to keep the detailer moving. Available whenever a project requires it or a client wants the added confidence.
Erection Engineering
Erection is where the project either comes together or comes apart. We engineer lift plans, stability analyses, temporary bracing, and the support steel your erector needs to keep the work safe and on schedule, planned early enough to prevent the kind of surprises that cost time and money in the field.
Field Fix Support
When something doesn't fit in the field, the clock is already running. We respond fast with sealed sketches, repair details, and the calcs to back them up, drawing on the same shop and field experience that shapes the rest of our work, so your crew can keep moving and your schedule stays intact.

Why Fabricators Should Choose SSE?

Steel engineering is all we do. We've built our team and our processes around doing it well, and that focus is what lets us turn projects fast, stay sharp on the standards, and deliver details that actually fabricate and erect the way they're drawn. We aren't a general structural firm that takes connection work on the side. Every engineer here has built their career around steel, and our principals came up through fabrication shops before they started stamping drawings. That perspective shapes how the whole team works, from how we read a set of contract documents to how we mark up a shop drawing.

Connection design is the core of what we do, but it's only part of the picture. We handle the full delegated steel engineering scope, and we're licensed in 46 states with more than 1,500 projects behind us. Whatever the project type, we've probably engineered something like it before, and we bring that experience to every new job.

What we hear most from the fabricators we work with is that we feel less like an outside consultant and more like part of their team. From the first kickoff call through AISC shop audits, detailer coordination, and field fixes, we're set up to support whatever a fabricator needs from their delegated steel engineer. The goal is for working with SSE to feel like having an in-house engineering department, one that already speaks your language and is invested in keeping your project moving.

Frequently Asked Questions

A few of the questions we hear most often from fabricators. If you don't see what you're looking for, we're happy to talk it through and answer anything else on your mind. Reach out for a quote, schedule a quick intro call, or just send us your question directly.

1. Do you collaborate with Fabricators and Erectors?

Yes, we coordinate with fabricators and erectors. We want to make sure that we design efficient connections for the shop and easily constructible connections for the erector in the field. Collaboration early in the process is critical to ensure all parties are on the same page.

2. Can you provide a detailed scope of work and cost estimate?

Yes, Southern Steel Engineers provides proposals with detailed scopes of work and exclusions explicitly tailored to the project. Our goal is to ensure we have the appropriate scope covered and clearly communicate that through our proposal. Our proposals include lump sum pricing so that our client has a clear understanding of our fees and there are no surprises.

3. How do you handle project scheduling and deadlines?

Southern Steel Engineers takes a proactive approach to project management. We use advanced scheduling tools and regular progress updates to ensure we meet deadlines.

We prioritize design for early sequences as well as long lead-time items. Our proactive approach starts at the project kickoff, where we identify RFI’s and key coordination issues. From there we work to provide designs as quickly as possible in priority sequences to get the steel detailer moving and then ultimately steel into the shop and then field.
