Project: Assembly Yards

SSE Scope: Connection Design, Shop Drawing Review, Stair & Rail Design

Location: Doraville, GA

Construction Date: 2022

Structure Type: Production Studio

Tonnage: 9,752 tons
Southern Steel Engineers provided connection design, miscellaneous steel design, and stair and rail design for multiple studio sound stages located at Assembly Yards in Doraville, Georgia. The project encompassed several large-scale studio buildings, each requiring customized structural and architectural steel solutions to meet the demands of production and safety standards.
Connection Scope
The connection design scope included a wide range of connection types, such as standard and non-standard shear connections, hollow structural section (HSS) connections, axial connections, moment connections, vertical bracing, and truss connections.
A significant portion of the connection design focused on multiple long-span trusses, ranging from 120 to 150 feet in length. These trusses featured unique end-bearing conditions with high loads at wall bearing pads. Designing these critical connections required specialized analysis methods and additional chord reinforcing to accommodate offset loading and ensure long-term structural stability.
Miscellaneous Steel Scope
The miscellaneous steel scope included the design of catwalk railings, stairs, ladders, and studio landing rails across multiple buildings within the complex.
Catwalk access stairs and multilevel concrete-filled pan egress stairs were designed to provide safe and efficient movement throughout the facility. The project also included fall arrest ladders up to 56 feet tall, standard roof access ladders, brace barrier rails, and safety guardrails up to 62 inches high.
Additional elements included cast-in-place (CIP) ramp rails and platform rails integrated into various studio structures.
