ENGINEERING FOR STEEL DETAILERS

An engineering partner for your delegated design needs, built around the way detailers actually work

WE KNOW HOW DETAILERS WORK
SSE got its start sharing an office with a detailing firm, and our founder spent years detailing steel before he started engineering it. That background still shapes how we work. We know what slows detailing down, what a clean sketch looks like, and how much information you actually need to keep moving without chasing RFIs.
A PROACTIVE APPROACH TO CONNECTION DESIGN
Our goal on every sketch is to give you what you need to detail the connection right the first time. Bolt counts, plate sizes, welds, edge distances, and the geometry to make it all fit in the model. When something changes on the project or a condition needs a second look, we get the update to you fast so your team keeps moving forward.
WE STEP IN WHERE IT HELPS
Coordination calls, RFIs, design team meetings, the moments where a connection question needs an engineer in the room. We've spent a lot of time working with detailers, fabricators, erectors, EORs, and architects, and we know how to read what each party needs. When your team needs technical backup, we're set up to step in and help move things forward.
DIRECT ACCESS TO YOUR PROJECT ENGINEER
Every SSE project is run by a licensed PE or SE who's with you from kickoff through erection. When you call, you're talking to the engineer making the decisions on your job, not a layer in between. Quick answers, clear ownership, and one person you can trust with the details from the first sketch through the last shop drawing.

experience that keeps detailers moving

Across more than 1,500 completed projects with detailing partners nationwide, we've engineered connections for nearly every kind of steel job a detailer runs into, from heavy industrial and high-seismic hospitals to data centers, aerospace, and schools, on projects anywhere from a few tons up to 40,000 tons. Every project sharpens the way we approach the next, which is why our process is built around what detailers actually need to keep their part of the job on schedule.
COLLABORATIVE KICKOFF
Kickoff is where we get on the same page with you. Your software, your conventions, how you like information delivered, and what's already been decided on the project. A few minutes of coordination up front saves a lot of back-and-forth later and sets the job up to run smoothly from the start.
clear engineering
Our founder came up as a detailer, and that perspective still shapes how we put a sketch together. We draw them to be easy to read and easy to detail from, with full geometry, every dimension you need, and the connection logic spelled out. We'd rather spend an extra minute on the sketch than send you chasing answers later.
CONNECTION DESIGN
Connection design is the core of what we do. Shear tabs, clip angles, end plates, moment connections, bracing, and everything in between, designed to AISC standards and built around how the steel will actually be fabricated and erected. Whatever the project type, we've engineered something like it before.
MISCELLANEOUS DESIGN
Stairs, platforms, ladders, handrails, canopies, and the secondary steel that always seems to fall through the cracks. We engineer misc with the same care we put into primary connections, on the same schedule as the rest of your project, so it's never the thing slowing your detailing down.
RESPONSIVE PM'S
Every SSE project is run by a licensed engineer who's also your PM, from kickoff through the last field fix. Detailer questions, urgent issues right before drawings go to the shop, and field fixes all get treated like the priority they are. We work to get you clear answers quickly so your team isn't stuck waiting on engineering.
Shop Drawing Review
Reviewing your drawings is one more chance to catch something before it hits the shop. We turn reviews quickly, mark up cleanly, and keep our comments focused on what actually matters so you're not chasing redlines that shouldn't have been there in the first place.
Shop Submittals
Once detailing wraps, the goal is getting steel into the shop without losing momentum. We turn submittal reviews quickly, keep our RFI responses clean, and stay on top of approval cycles so the package moves through without bottlenecks on our end. The faster the loop closes, the sooner the shop can start cutting steel.
FIELD COORDINATION
Even on a well-engineered job, things come up in the shop or out in the field. Fit-up issues, missed conditions, last-minute changes. We've worked through enough of those moments to know how to coordinate with fabricators and erectors and find a fix that keeps the job moving. Closing the loop on the field side is how we see a project through.

Why DETAILErs Should Choose SSE?

Steel engineering is all we do. We've built our team and our process around doing it well, and that focus is what lets us put out clear sketches, communicate effectively, and deliver connection packages that actually work for the people detailing them. Every engineer here has built their career around steel, and our founder came up as a detailer before he ever stamped a drawing. That perspective shapes how we draw a sketch, how we answer a question, and how we think about your part of the job.

Connection design is the core of what we do, but it's only part of the picture. We handle the full delegated steel engineering scope, including misc design, stairs and rails, shop drawing review, and field support, and we're licensed in 46 states with more than 1,500 projects behind us. We work with detailers no matter what platform you're in (Tekla, SDS2, Bocad, AutoCAD), and we collaborate through the tools your team already uses like Bluebeam and Trimble Connect, so we can plug into your workflow instead of forcing you into ours.

What we hear most from the detailers we work with is that we feel less like an outside engineer and more like part of their team. From the first kickoff call through shop drawing review and into the field, we're set up to support how detailers actually work, and we measure our success by yours. The goal is for working with SSE to feel like having a trusted engineering partner in your corner, one that already speaks your language and is invested in helping your team succeed on every project.
