Spring Garden (The Noble)

Project: Spring Garden (The Noble)

SSE Scope: Connection Design

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Construction Date: 2024

Structure Type: Apartments
Southern Steel Engineers provided delegated steel connection design for this 13-story apartment tower, which featured structured parking and 25,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor. The building’s signature design included a tree-like column structure supporting one end of the L-shaped tower, presenting unique structural challenges that required carefully engineered solutions.
Connection Scope
The connection design scope included a wide range of connection types, such as standard and non-standard shear connections, vertical and horizontal bracing, axial beam connections, moment connections, hollow structural section (HSS) beams, column splices, beam-over-column connections, and column post-to-beam connections.
Several specialized connection conditions were addressed throughout the project. These included post-to-skewed beam connections that required detailed analysis of skewed beam stiffeners, heavy extended shear tab connections with haunch plates, and heavily loaded wide-flange bracing spliced to gusset plates using flange and web plate assemblies or claw angle configurations.
The team also designed HSS connections subject to torsion and horizontal shear forces that were offset from column lines, ensuring both stability and constructability. Additionally, heavy moment connections exceeding 4,000 k-ft were analyzed and engineered to accommodate the building’s unique load paths and architectural configuration.
